1 hour capes

With my favorite rave Escape soon approaching and an opportunity to dress up as anything I wanted I of course …waited until the last possible second to make an outfit as usual.  For this rave I made four vampire capes with a few slightly different variations in style, fabric, and thread color.  I wanted them to give off the same feel but we each wanted to have our own moment.  I am super pumped on how quickly I was able to perfect little techniques as I progressed on to each cape.

I started with my cape.  The pattern I had called for 3 1/2 yards of 60 inch wide fabric which I couldn’t find; I settled for 45 inch.  Upon purchase I had no idea what obstacles this would face me with but I was determined to make it work no matter what.. I only had 2 days until rave day so I could be too picky.  I laid out my fabric and threw the pattern down on it.  All of the important parts of the pattern fit nicely on the fabric, but it was a little short at the bottom hem; with this being the only problem I decided I would just make my  cape a little shorter than the pattern asks for.. (I am a little shorter in person anyway).  The cape is one cut out piece of fabric with a dart on either side of the neck line to wrap it around the body and sit on the shoulder.  These darts are the coolest thing since sliced bread, at least that’s how I was feeling when I first sewed them up and it formed the cape. Next I got the collar ready which I needed to interface- I wasn’t thinking when I bought white interfacing to go underneath black lace which changed the look of the cape completely, but I didn’t hate it.  Thankfully I have put in a collar before (now plus four) so that went fairly quickly and looked really good.  I remembered to snip the seams before turning it under and over stitching the collar closed, which sometimes isn’t mentioned in the pattern.  The pattern also called for fur along the raw edges which I omitted because I didn’t care for it.  My last step was to add lace coverage and a lace gathering over the collar for a little more flare.  I like this last step with my cape but didn’t add it to the other girls because I learned from the white interfacing on black lace.  The other three capes had solid black collars which I didn’t think needed any extra attention.  the final products:

I got the hang of making them after mine so I was able to make the last two the morning of the event!  I love that we all picked out our fabric separately but stayed with the same sheer spider style.  The other girls asked for shorter capes because they had less fabric and thought that would be a cuter style.  I was stoked because I got to try something different and make a multiple design.

I had so much fun twirling around all night in something that I made. Such a proud moment seeing my friends run around in something they love, that I made (‘:
